For the 20th straight year, the league is rolling out a full Thanksgiving triple-header, and for the 48th consecutive season, both the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys will host games on the holiday.
The 2025 NFL Thanksgiving schedule carries on a lineage that stretches back to 1920, when the league was still known as the American Professional Football Association and Thanksgiving wasn’t even a federally recognized date.
Except for the years spanning 1941 through 1944 during World War II, the NFL has delivered at least one Thanksgiving game every year for more than a century. Detroit has anchored the holiday since 1934, missing only the window between 1939 and 1944 due to the Great Depression and WWII. Dallas adopted the tradition in 1966 and has appeared annually ever since, with the rare exceptions of 1975 and 1977.
