2022- Year in Review

It’s that time again—the gifts, the feasts and the Christmas trees have all come and gone.

Following years of uncertainty—and a global pandemic that has proven to be one of the most challenging events in history—we forged on, prepared to tackle what lay ahead. And as we continued to extract the possible from the impossible, this year taught us, above all, that our voices—no matter how big or small—can change the world.

From the first Black Woman appointed to the Supreme Court to the death of Roe V. Wade, we take a look back at the 2022 OBSERVER covers published throughout the year shown below.

Whether it’s trade, real estate or health care, it’s fair to say the year has brought its challenges to neighbors and businesses across the country—and those in San Antonio were no exception. But 2022 also marked great accomplishments here in S.A. City Council approved relief to its neighbors through property tax deductions along with reducing SAWS water rates.  These hit our pockets directly and will assist many during this time of inflation. And we can’t forget those UTSA Roadrunners and UIW Cardinals, Mayor Ron Nirenberg states in his column (read it here), “How about those UTSA Roadrunners and UIW Cardinals? Both teams excelled, winning their respective conference championships for the second consecutive year.”

Community news serves our city well for all its neighbors who need to know the information in and around their own community.  Strong local stories bolster our democracy in several important ways. The most essential one is that a local source of news helps create a shared culture. We live in a time when all sorts of political, social, and public health issues are tearing away at our notion of community. In the end, we as a community, band together to enhance our lives and those of our neighbors. Everything starts at the local level, we must always be informed to continue to shape our daily lives and those for generations to come through the information we know, receive and then, hopefully, act on.

In this final week of 2022, we’ll take a glimpse at the year we’ve all been through—the good and the bad. And we’ll prepare to celebrate a new start with 2023.

To all of our readers, thank you for trusting us with your local community news and information. As we embark on 29 years of service, it is only because of each and everyone of you who tune in every Wednesday for news that touches you.

God bless our city of San Antonio and happy New Years to you and your families.
