Raven-Symone’s Comments About Raven Baxter Have Sparked a Wider Conversation About Black Identity, Culture and Representation
She has been in the entertainment industry since the age of 3. She has been a cultural icon for several generations of children. Her credits include The Cosby Show, Hanging With Mr Cooper, and of course, That’s So Raven. Raven-Symone is a name that is synonymous with other famous child actors such as Macaulay Culkin, Gary Coleman, Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen, and more. Raven-Symone is one of the few entertainers and one of the youngest to have a hit television show in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s.
A Question About Raven Baxter
Still, the 39 year old singer, actress, producer, and podcaster, is no stranger to controversy. Raven-Symone has recently made headlines over her remarks about the race of her famous moniker Raven Baxter. In a September 2026 episode of her podcast Tea Time with Raven & Miranda with wife Miranda Madday, Raven poses the question of whether Raven Baxter was Black. She posited the hypothetical scenario of changing them to green characters and it would make no difference. This spanked major discourse and controversy.
A History of Controversial Comments
This isn’t the first time Raven’s comments have landed her in some controversy. In a 2014 interview with Oprah, Raven declared herself, “an American, not an African American”. Symone later clarified and never said she wasn’t Black. Now, twelve years later, these same sentiments are creating waves across the internet.
The Online Debate Over Blackness
Various sources from The Root and Ebony magazine have been creating pockets of online discussion from posting various clips from the show and using various attributes from fashion and hairstyles to justify the Blackness. Yet something about this discussion feels unfinished.
Culture Beyond Skin Color
Writer Danyale Freeman, in her 2026 article for Ebony magazine, “Raven-Symone’s Color Perspective Can’t Deny Culture”, writes, “to exist as a Black person, no matter where you’re from or where your origins are rooted, is to understand that though we are not a monolithic people, we share sameness in various ways.
The cultural, behavioral, and even beliefs we share as a community go beyond the barrier of skin. It’s the ability to recognize and connect in ways we’re unable to experience with others.” Moreover, the Black community has attributes and traditions that have long been originated and cultivated by its members. However, there are also attributes and traditions that have also been associated with the Black community but members of various communities.
Representation and the Fear of Erasure
Furthermore, it can be argued that the reason why this topic has gone viral is because the Black community is reaching a moment in time where there are now a myriad of cultural media figures that personify the legacy of Black representation.
With the onset of AI and the policing of Blackness across television, film, and social media, there is concern of erasure and with it, a long standing legacy of a people.
