Snoop Dogg Hosts 2026 VMAs As Music’s Genre Lines Continue To Blend

The Rap Veteran Led Sunday Night’s Ceremony As Artists Across Hip-Hop, R&B, Country, Pop And Afrobeats Shared The Stage

Snoop Dogg took on a new role Sunday night, hosting the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

The rapper, who has spent more than three decades moving between music, television, sports and business, also served as an executive producer of the Sept. 27 ceremony.

Snoop entered the night as a 13-time VMA nominee and three-time winner, with a history at the awards show stretching back to the 1990s.

But the night was about more than one host.

The performances and nominations reflected how much popular music continues to move beyond traditional genre lines, with artists crossing between hip-hop, country, R&B, pop and Afrobeats.

Shaboozey And Gunna Share The Stage

Shaboozey made his VMA performance debut with “Cowgirl” before joining Gunna for the first televised performance of their collaboration “High Noon.”

The pairing reflected one of the night’s broader themes: artists are increasingly moving between styles that once would have been marketed to completely separate audiences.

Shaboozey has become one of the most visible artists working at the intersection of country and contemporary pop, while Gunna remains firmly rooted in hip-hop.

Elsewhere, Burna Boy brought Afrobeats into the awards conversation, while artists including Doechii, Kehlani, Teyana Taylor and Tyla appeared across performances, nominations and presenting roles.

Snoop’s Full-Circle Moment

For Snoop, hosting the VMAs marked another step in an unusually broad career.

He first became a major figure in West Coast hip-hop in the 1990s and has since expanded into film, television, sports coverage, advertising and entrepreneurship.

His previous VMA appearances included performances and tributes alongside some of hip-hop’s biggest names.

This time, he was responsible for guiding the entire show.

The ceremony also highlighted how much the music industry itself has changed. Artists now routinely move across genre boundaries, collaborations bring together audiences that once rarely overlapped, and streaming has made traditional labels increasingly difficult to enforce.

The 2026 VMAs reflected that reality throughout the night.

Snoop may have represented hip-hop history at the center of the show, but the larger story was how much contemporary music has evolved around him.
