City Honors Mexico’s Independence With Cultural Programs and Community Events
San Antonio will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with special programming honoring the city’s deep cultural and historical ties to Mexico.
At the heart of the celebration is Diez y Seis de Septiembre, Mexico’s Independence Day. On Sept. 16, 1810, Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla delivered the historic “Grito de Dolores,” a call that sparked Mexico’s fight for independence from Spain.
San Antonio commemorates that pivotal moment each September through Fiestas Patrias events, cultural performances, educational activities and family-centered programs.
Celebrating Culture and History
The city’s Diez y Seis de Septiembre Commission oversees San Antonio’s annual celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day and Hispanic Heritage Month.
Programming coordinated through the commission highlights the historical significance of Mexico’s struggle for independence while celebrating the traditions and contributions that continue to shape San Antonio.
Events include cultural programming, educational initiatives and activities designed for children, families and older adults.
Hispanic Heritage Month is observed nationally from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, providing an opportunity to recognize the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans whose families trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and South America.
