As the Mayor Navigates Trump Relationship Obama Meets Mamdani for the First Time

Former President Barack Obama met with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Saturday during a visit to a child care center, where the two spent time reading to preschoolers and leading a singalong.

The visit marked the first in-person meeting between Obama and Mamdani since the mayor took office in January. During the event, they read the children’s book “Alone and Together” and joined the students in singing “The Wheels on the Bus.” Neither man took questions from reporters following the appearance.

Obama, a two-term president and leading figure in Democratic politics, has offered to serve as a sounding board for Mamdani, 34, whose early tenure and progressive policy agenda have drawn national attention.

Mamdani recently marked his 100th day in office after campaigning on making New York City more affordable and directing government resources toward working class residents. His approach has positioned him as a prominent voice among younger Democratic leaders.

At the same time, Mamdani has been working to maintain a functional relationship with President Donald Trump. The two have met twice at the White House in recent months to discuss issues affecting New York City.

That relationship has recently shown signs of strain. Trump posted on social media this week that Mamdani was “DESTROYING New York” with his tax policies and indicated that federal funding for the city could be at risk.

Mamdani’s leadership continues to reflect the challenge of balancing local priorities with national political dynamics as he works to establish his administration.
