Community Call To Action Meeting Planned As East Side Families Face Youth Program Closures

An Oct. 2 Community Meeting Will Bring Residents Together to Discuss Support and Solutions for Families and Youth Amid Concerns Over Changes to Boys & Girls Clubs Programming

As East Side families continue grappling with the looming pause of programming at the longtime Eastside Boys & Girls Club, a new community meeting is calling residents together to focus on what comes next.

A “Community Call to Action” is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. at Second Baptist Community Center, 3310 E. Commerce St.

The gathering is being promoted around a message of “Help Save Our Kids & Community,” with organizers saying the evening will focus on unity, support and solutions for “a safer, stronger tomorrow.”

The flyer does not specifically identify the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio or say the meeting was organized in direct response to the recently announced clubhouse changes. But its focus on youth, families and community support comes as East Side residents are already raising concerns about the loss of a longstanding neighborhood resource.

Meeting Comes Amid Eastside Boys & Girls Club Concerns

The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio recently notified families that programming at its Eastside Clubhouse, 3503 Martin Luther King Drive, will pause Sept. 30 for the remainder of the school year. The organization’s Rayburn Clubhouse is also set to close permanently Sept. 25.

The Eastside Clubhouse has long served children and families in the neighborhood. Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio currently lists the MLK Drive location among its clubhouses serving children ages 6 to 18 through after-school and other youth programming.

The Observer reported this week that the Eastside announcement prompted an immediate response from former members, parents and other residents who described the clubhouse as a longtime fixture in the community.

The Oct. 2 flyer widens that conversation beyond any single organization, calling on families, youth and neighbors to participate under the theme “Bringing Our Community Together.”
