Chatman’s Chicken Blood Drive Offers Tickets to Carver Production “Background Check”

A Sept. 6 Blood Drive at Chatman’s Chicken Will Support Local Patients and Reward Donors with Tickets to “Background Check” at the Carver Center

A San Antonio blood drive will bring together lifesaving donations, sickle cell awareness and the performing arts through a special community partnership this September.

South Texas Blood & Tissue will hold the Chatman’s Chicken Community Blood Drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, at 1747 S. WW White Road.

The event, held during Sickle Cell Awareness Month, will give residents an opportunity to support local patients while celebrating community, culture and live theater.

Everyone who donates blood will receive a blood donor T-shirt and two tickets to see “Background Check” at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Carver Community Cultural Center.

Theater Tickets Offered to Donors

Written and directed by Jermain Coleman, “Background Check” explores friendship, trust, romance and the influence of social media on modern relationships.

The production combines pop culture, comedy, music and heartfelt storytelling. South Texas Blood & Tissue is a sponsor of the production, making the partnership an opportunity to connect blood donors with San Antonio’s local arts community.

The blood drive also aims to raise awareness of the continuing need for a strong and diverse blood supply, particularly for patients living with sickle cell disease.

Transfusions Provide Critical Support

Kami Crawford understands firsthand how important a reliable blood supply can be. Crawford, a sickle cell patient, requires a blood transfusion at least once a month and has received more than 100 transfusions.

For some people living with sickle cell disease, transfusions are a recurring and necessary part of medical care. A dependable blood supply helps ensure those patients can receive treatment when they need it.

Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited blood disorders that causes red blood cells to become hard and sticky. The misshapen cells can obstruct blood flow and prevent oxygen from reaching parts of the body.

Patients can experience anemia, episodes of severe pain, infections, stroke and damage to organs and other tissues.

Through the Sept. 6 event, South Texas Blood & Tissue and its community partners are inviting residents to give blood, support patients and enjoy an evening of live theater while recognizing Sickle Cell Awareness Month.
