Carver Library Renovation Moves Forward With New Community Spaces
The transformation of San Antonio’s Carver Branch Library is taking shape on the East Side, with construction on the $12.8 million renovation reaching 45% completion as of August 2026.
Located at 3350 E. Commerce St., the longtime East Side library is undergoing an expansion and renovation funded through the voter-approved 2022 City of San Antonio Bond. The project includes $12.5 million for renovations and another $300,000 dedicated to public art.
Recent construction milestones include pouring a new foundation and installing steel framing and walls for the library’s new meeting space.
$2 Million Fundraising Campaign Approved
The project could receive additional improvements beyond those already funded through the bond.

At its August 26 meeting, the San Antonio Public Library Board of Trustees approved a capital fundraising campaign that will be led by the San Antonio Public Library Foundation. The campaign aims to raise an additional $2 million for improvements at Carver.
The fundraising effort comes as construction continues on a project designed to substantially expand the services and spaces available to the surrounding community.
New African American Resource Center Coming
Among the most significant additions will be a new African American Resource Center.
Carver has deep roots in San Antonio’s Black community. The library is named for scientist and educator George Washington Carver, and the history of library service connected to Carver dates back more than a century.
The renovation will include the new African American Resource Center and create a dedicated space for those resources.
The building will also gain a new community meeting space, along with a new exterior monument sign designed to give the library greater visibility along Commerce Street.
Another major addition will be the San Antonio Public Library system’s first dedicated tween space specifically designed for children ages 9 through 12.
Library Services Continue At Denver Heights
Although the Carver building remains under construction, library services have continued in the neighborhood.

Carver staff are operating from the Denver Heights Community Center, where patrons have access to books, movies, magazines, public computers, Wi-Fi and printing services.
The temporary location is also continuing to provide space for community activities and organizations, including the Carver Page Turners book group and Crochet Club.
The Denver Heights Community has been so welcoming since we arrived last August. It’s been great to see our regular customers follow us to the interim site, while also gaining new customers.
Carver Branch Library Manager D.L. Grant
Grant said residents are closely following construction at the Commerce Street location.
“We’ve heard from many of our patrons excited to see the progress as they pass by the Carver Branch construction site along Commerce Street. Visitors ask us frequently about the reopening,” Grant said. “It will be a wonderful space, and I can’t wait for the community to see it.”
Carver’s temporary location is also continuing to serve as a site for community programs.
With construction now 45% complete, the project is moving toward an expanded Carver Branch Library with new gathering areas, dedicated spaces for young people and a stronger focus on African American history and resources.
