Recent Polling Shows the Races for Texas Governor and U.S. Senate Are Closer Than Previously Anticipated
The political landscape across Texas, and possibly across the country, could be next to change in view of recent polling results. We are taking a close look at two of the most important races in Texas—the contest for the governor’s office between incumbent Greg Abbott and challenger Gina Hinojosa.
The other important contest is for the U.S. Senate seat between AG Ken Paxton and candidate James Talarico. According to recent polling platforms, these races are much closer than anticipated and are described as “tossups,” after having been described as “leaning Republican” and “leaning Democrat,” respectively. Both Democratic candidates were trailing some months ago but have since managed to make up ground and are now within the margin of error, according to polling results.
Questions Surrounding Abbott’s Record
Questions have arisen on a variety of issues, focusing on Abbott’s decisions regarding public education versus vouchers, his support for building data centers in rural areas of Texas, as well as tax increases, which he has alleged that “the Democrats want to raise taxes.”
Looking at the voucher issue, sources reported that “the fight wasn’t about the kids—it was about money.” Abbott reportedly accepted “a $6.2 million campaign donation” from an out-of-state school voucher champion. The governor also supported SB2, which offered families up to $10,000 per year in taxpayer dollars for private school tuition, tutoring, textbooks, and other education-related expenses through state-managed savings accounts.
Data Centers Generate Public Concern
Regarding the data center issue, this has recently incited “national worries for the GOP,” and Abbott had previously championed building these data centers in Texas, touting that Texas “would become the Industry’s Capital Center.”
More challenges came about, particularly from Ms. Hinojosa’s campaign, regarding water usage and “giving hyperscale data centers a tax break as they strain our power grid,” which reportedly led to public outrage and prompted Abbott to send a strongly worded letter asking for a temporary pause. Online critics assailed Abbott for the switch—once the heat was turned up, he switched at election time. The reported pause led to some 1,800 projects being halted.
Talarico Gains Ground Against Paxton
In reviewing Senate candidates, AG Paxton has recently “faced a surge from the Democratic candidate James Talarico.” Reports are circulating regarding the “reluctance of some GOP donors to contribute” to Paxton’s campaign, even as he has received President Trump’s endorsement, which led to the runoff defeat of incumbent Senator John Cornyn.
Talarico has reportedly amassed some $30 million in campaign funds and leads in some of the national polls. One polling agency has Talarico leading 56% to 44%, while another has the representative ahead 52% to 48%, with both polls giving the Democrat “his first clear lead over the Trump-backed Republican.” The market movement follows a series of polls that showed Talarico narrowly ahead, giving hope to Democrats that the Republican stronghold might now be within striking distance.
Paxton’s Record and Conservative Positions
Paxton is reportedly “well known for his staunch conservative stances,” as well as his many scandals. Paxton has reportedly “used his contacts to enrich himself” and holds the distinction of having been “impeached by his own party,” as well as having a whistleblower report him to federal authorities. The polling results only belie the hope that “Paxton’s aggressive conservative positions and loyalty to Trump would outweigh the accumulated weight of scandal and legal jeopardy.”
Voters Will Have the Final Word
As in most tight political contests, voters have the final say in who is going to represent them and who best represents what the people expect from an elected official. In my humble opinion, there’s a powerful phrase from the 1960s: “Give the People What They Want!” In this case, the people will, once again, have the last word!
