Greg Abbott Maintains a Narrow Lead Over Gina Hinojosa in the Latest Texas Governor’s Race Survey
With under three months remaining until the election, the race for the governor’s office is getting closer, according to some recent polling numbers. As of the end of July, a new independent poll from Texas Public Opinion Research shows that the race between Rep. Gina Hinojosa and incumbent Greg Abbott is “within 3 points, at 42% to 45%, inside the margin of error.” ( + or – ), meaning the true result for either candidate could be up by 3.4 points higher or lower than the poll shows.
It found Abbot leading Hinojosa 45% to 42% with 10% of voters being undecided. That’s in contrast to a June 2026 poll by The New York Times, which showed Abbott leading Hinojosa 51% to 44% while a Texas Politics Project showed results with Abbott leading 47% to 40%, still within 7 points.
Hinojosa’s Background and Campaign
Gina Hinojosa is a licensed Attorney who was elected to the House of Representatives for the 49th District in the general election of November 2016 and sworn in on January 10, 2017. She succeeded Democrat Elliott Naishtat, who did not run for reelection. Her background included prior service on the Austin Independent School District’s school board, as a board member, part-time with Catholic Charities, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Texas Rural Legal Aid, and The Equal Justice Center.

At this point, sources indicate Hinojosa is leading among independents, moderates, Black and Latino voters, while Abbott leads among college-educated and white voters. Rep. Hinojosa has stated “new polling data shows Texans are ready for a change – my plan is simple: save public schools, put money in your pocket, and end the Greg Abbott corporation tax’.
Meantime Abbott “still focuses on lining the pockets of his billionaire buddies and data center donors, I’m traveling the state hearing from Republicans, Independents and Democrats that are ready to rebuild the American Dream, in Texas, with an economy that works for the people, strong neighborhood schools and safe communities.”
Abbott’s Record and Election Outlook
Abbott served as Attorney General from 2012 to 2013, under former Governor Rick Perry. He has held the governor’s office since 2015, defeating one Democratic adversary, Wendy Davis. He notably opposes abortion, supports lenient gun laws and tough immigration policies. After a 1984 jogging injury, Abbott left the Houston area law firm, where he had worked, to become a state trial judge. Four years later, he was appointed to a vacant seat by Governor George W. Bush, and subsequently was elected twice to that post. As attorney general, he reportedly “was delighted” to file more than 30 lawsuits against the Barack Obama administration.
Sources indicate that “he is now the least popular he has been in his political career”, as he focuses on culture wars, ignores Texas’ economic struggles and publicly flipflops on his support for data centers, after making promises to make Texas the “epicenter” of AI.
