The Broadway Adaptation of Prince’s Landmark 1984 Film Will Feature More Than 20 of His Biggest Hits and Officially Open in April 2027
Prince’s iconic film and album “Purple Rain” are headed to Broadway, where a new stage adaptation will bring the legendary musician’s story and music to a new generation of theatergoers.
The “Purple Rain” Broadway musical will begin preview performances at New York’s Majestic Theatre on March 12, 2027, before officially opening April 12, 2027.
The announcement comes as fans celebrate the 42nd anniversary of the 1984 film, which launched Prince’s acting career and became a worldwide box office success.
The production will feature more than 20 songs from Prince’s catalog, including “When Doves Cry,” “I Would Die 4 U,” “Take Me With You” and “The Beautiful Ones.”
According to the musical’s official synopsis, the story follows The Kid, a gifted young musician living in 1984 Minneapolis who dreams of becoming a star while facing personal struggles that could threaten his future.
The Broadway production will be directed by Saheem Ali, with a book written by playwright and screenwriter Peter Duchan, according to Variety.
Jason Michael Webb will lead the music team, while Ebony Williams will serve as choreographer. Prince’s longtime collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes are also involved as music advisers.
Ali said he first watched “Purple Rain” as a teenager in Kenya and hopes the stage adaptation will honor Prince’s legacy while introducing the artist’s work to a new generation of fans.
Production Previously Staged in Prince’s Hometown
The musical was first staged in Minneapolis in 2025 at the historic State Theatre in Prince’s hometown.
Released in 1984, “Purple Rain” earned nearly $100 million worldwide and became one of the defining works of Prince’s career.
The soundtrack won two Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, two Brit Awards and an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.
The album also spent 24 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Producers said the Broadway adaptation is intended to celebrate Prince’s artistry while preserving the bold and fearless spirit that made “Purple Rain” a cultural landmark.
