Carmen Tafolla’s “The Donkey Lady” Gets National Book Launch Celebration in San Antonio

Carmen Tafolla and Thelma Ortiz-Muraida Celebrate the National Launch of the Donkey Lady with Readings, Artwork, Music and a Book Signing

A beloved piece of San Antonio folklore will take center stage when Aztlan Libre Press hosts the official national launch of “The Donkey Lady/A Graphic Parable” on Saturday, June 20, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, 922 San Pedro Ave.

The new book marks the first children’s and young adult fiction title published by Aztlan Libre Press and is written by celebrated author, former San Antonio Poet Laureate and former Texas Poet Laureate Dr. Carmen Tafolla. Featuring illustrations by acclaimed artist Thelma Ortiz-Muraida, the graphic novel reimagines the legendary Donkey Lady story through a Chicana lens focused on resilience, compassion and historical justice.

The launch event will be more than a traditional book signing. Guests will enjoy a dramatic readers theater presentation featuring Tafolla and other performers, an exhibit showcasing original artwork from the book and live conjunto music by Juan and Armando Tejeda.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet Tafolla and Ortiz-Muraida during a book signing and reception. Books will be available for purchase, and light refreshments will be served throughout the afternoon.
