The SAISD Foundation Book Buddies Bus Stopped at MLK-Gates Academy to Provide Free Books for Students
Literacy and learning took center stage at MLK-Gates Academy during the recent Rotary Reads event, where community leaders, volunteers and educators gathered to encourage students to keep reading beyond the classroom.
The event featured a visit from the SAISD Foundation’s Book Buddies Bus, a mobile literacy initiative that provides free books to local children. Former San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg stopped by to read to third grade students while Rotarians spread throughout the campus reading to classrooms.
As part of the effort, the Rotary Club donated more than 250 books to the SAISD Foundation to help expand access to reading materials for children across the district.
Organizers said the need for books continues, especially during the summer months when many students lose regular access to reading resources outside of school.
Community members are encouraged to support the effort by purchasing books through the SAISD Foundation’s Amazon wish list to help ensure more children have books of their own at home this summer.
