SAPL hosts Film Screenings Across San Antonio to Celebrate this Year’s Centennial Black History Month
As we arrive at about the halfway mark of the month, of this historic 100th Black History Month, the San Antonio Public Library will be screening a variety of iconic and eye-opening films across town in honor of the centennial BHM.
The screenings began last week, and they’ve already shown a few films (including “Blade,” “Marley,” “The Woman in the Yard,” and several others) hosted by various SAPL locations, but it’s not too late to check out the rest of the movies they’ll be showing through the end of February.
The next film SAPL has in line to be screened is “Ruby Bridges,” a Disney movie that came out in ‘98 and tells the true story of the six-year-old who was the first Black student to integrate to a formerly all-white segregated elementary school in New Orleans, where she summons strength and courage in the face of monstrous racism. “Ruby Bridges” will be shown on February 12th at the Great Northwest Library.
Following “Ruby Bridges” will be “Till,” the recent 2022 dramatization of the tragic story of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old who was lynched in Mississippi while visiting his cousins. “Till” specifically tells the story of Emmett’s mother, Mamie Till Mobley, and her undying fight for justice for the atrocity inflicted on her son. The film provides a somber reflection on one of the darkest chapters of this country’s history, recounting the emotional and awe-inspiring journey of how a mother’s grief for her son became action in the face of injustice, ultimately leading to the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1957. “Till” will screen at the Westfall Library on Sunday, February 15th.
SAPL will also host a more lighthearted film screening, in the form of the already-classic animated superhero movie, “Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse.” Following the story of the dimension-hopping Spiderman, Miles Morales, the 2018 movie offers a groundbreaking and fresh version of the classic superhero tale, through an animated visual style unlike anything else shown on the Big Screen. The “Into the Spider-Verse” screening will be held on Monday, the 16th, at the Las Palmas Library.
