San Antonio Playwrights Invited to Submit Scripts for Teatro Salón Series

Selected Scripts Will Be Developed and Publicly Read Later This Year in San Antonio

Have you ever wanted to write a play, but don’t know where to start? Playwriting is an artform that is not as widely practiced or accessible as it once was, but San Antonio’s very own Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center aims to keep it alive through their Teatro Table Reading Series, which is now accepting submissions of unproduced scripts for a chance at being developed and brought to the stage.

The Teatro Salón Table Reading Series is a creative workshop hosted by the city, with the intention of providing an outlet dedicated to developing and rehearsing new plays by independent playwrights supported by peer feedback and community engagement. The Teatro Series welcomes writers from all backgrounds (but specifically from Texas) to submit their work(s), experienced writers as well as those who have never written anything before in their lives, but the theme of the script(s) must represent the Latinx, Chicano/a, and/or Tejano experience in some form or fashion. Scripts with ‘Dia de los Muertos’ and ‘Christmas’ themes are also highly encouraged.

Past contributors to the Teatro Series have gone on to see their plays receive wider attention and success, including one of last year’s chosen productions (“Las Comadres de Morales Street”), written by San Antonio local, Irene Chavez. The Teatro Series is open to established writers as well as new writers, “even if you’ve never written a play,” according to Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center’s Theater Arts Director, Jorge Piña. “We want to support underrepresented playwrights, including women, LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, disabled, neurodiverse, etc., and encourage you to submit.”

Two to three scripts will ultimately be chosen for a table reading session that is open to the public and will be held in August/September later this year. The submission deadline is 4pm on March 31st, so if you or someone you know is a playwright (or an aspiring one) now is the time to enter for a chance to see your work brought to life. For more info on the opportunity, visit www.guadalupeculturalarts.org, or you can email Jorge Piña, at jorgep@guadalupeculturalarts.org.
