Eddie Murphy AFI Lifetime Achievement Award Honors His Five-Decade Career, To Be Presented In April
Every year the American Film Institute (AFI) chooses one leading figure of the film industry to be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, a highly prestigious honor bestowed onto only the most acclaimed individuals in Hollywood. The AFI just announced its 2026 winner as Eddie Murphy, who will be granted the award with a gala on April 18th.
Since 1973, the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award has been referred to as the one of the highest honors to be given for a career in film, with an alumni class filled with legends like Morgan Freeman, Al Pacino, Barbara Streisand, Denzel Washington, and many, many, more. If Murphy’s status as an actor of repute was ever in question, joining the ranks of these stars will surely solidify his prestige.
“Eddie Murphy is an American icon,” the Chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, Kathleen Kennedy, said in a press conference recently. “A trailblazing force in the art forms of film, television and stand-up comedy, his versatility knows no bounds. Across five decades, his enduring impact on our culture has inspired artists and audiences alike, and AFI is proud to honor him with the 51st AFI Life Achievement Award.”
Beginning his career as a stand-up comedian a little over 45 years ago, when he was just 19, he has since starred in multiple movies that have topped the $100 million mark, putting him in a very small group of film vets who share this achievement.
At 64, Murphy is one of the top five actors in the industry in terms of box-office output, and he’s one of the most commercially successful actors of all time. Anything from action movie roles like “Beverly Hills Cop” and “The Golden Child,” to gut-busting comedic performances in “Coming 2 America” and “Daddy Day Care,” and his iconic voice acting stints in family-friendly classics like “Madagascar” and “Shrek,” as well as countless others, Eddie Murphy has made an impact across multiple genres and reached millions of different fans all around the world.
It’s no surprise that he was chosen for this honor, and it comes at a crucial moment of career reflection for Murphy, having just released a Netflix documentary delving into his life and career trajectory, “Being Eddie.”
