NFL Quarterback Injuries Pile Up as Week 3 Approaches

AT A GLANCE
  • Washington QB Jayden Daniels has a knee sprain; his status for Week 3 is uncertain.
  • Cincinnati Bengals placed Joe Burrow on IR with a toe injury requiring surgery, signing Mike White and Sean Clifford.
  • Minnesota rookie J.J. McCarthy sidelined with a high ankle sprain; Carson Wentz expected to start.
  • Justin Fields in concussion protocol; Jets may turn to veteran Tyrod Taylor.
  • 49ers’ Brock Purdy nursing turf toe, opening the door for Mac Jones.

Commanders’ Daniels Dealing With Knee Sprain

The Washington Commanders’ promising start to the season took a hit when Jayden Daniels, the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year, sprained his knee during last week’s loss to Green Bay. Multiple reports confirmed that Daniels underwent an MRI and is considered “day-to-day.” Head coach Dan Quinn told reporters that he could not guarantee Daniels’ availability for Sunday’s home matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

If Daniels sits, veteran Marcus Mariota would make his first start since 2022. Mariota has already relieved Daniels in key moments before, thriving under offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. The Commanders have lost RB Austin Ekeler (Achilles) and DE Deatrich Wise (calf) for the season, while TE John Bates and WR Noah Brown are also dealing with hamstring injuries.

Bengals Lose Burrow, Sign Reinforcements

Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow is headed for surgery after suffering turf toe in a win over Jacksonville, an injury expected to sideline him at least three months. The Bengals moved quickly, placing him on injured reserve and signing veteran quarterbacks Mike White and Sean Clifford to the practice squad.

Jake Browning, who stepped in midgame and led a 92-yard, game-winning drive against the Jaguars, will start moving forward. “I feel very confident in Jake,” head coach Zac Taylor said. Still, losing Burrow is a crushing blow, as it marks the third time in six seasons he will miss significant time with injury.

Vikings Turn to Wentz After McCarthy Injury

Minnesota rookie J.J. McCarthy will miss 2–4 weeks with a high ankle sprain, thrusting Carson Wentz back into the starting role. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has already cycled through quarterbacks in recent seasons and will again test his reputation as a “QB whisperer.” Wentz, now with his fifth team in as many years, is expected to start Sunday against the Bengals.

Jets Could Lean on Tyrod Taylor

The New York Jets’ early momentum may stall after Justin Fields entered concussion protocol following a poor performance in Week 2. Veteran Tyrod Taylor, who relieved Fields against Buffalo, is poised to start if Fields cannot go against Tampa Bay. Taylor has started for five other NFL teams and could provide stability while the Jets wait on Fields’ recovery.

49ers Riding with Mac Jones

San Francisco is facing its own quarterback shuffle after Brock Purdy suffered turf toe in the opener. Mac Jones, signed this offseason, stepped in and delivered a strong performance in a win over New Orleans. The 49ers, now 2-0, will continue with Jones as the starter against the Arizona Cardinals, though Purdy’s absence could stretch several weeks.

A Brutal Start for NFL Quarterbacks

Five starting quarterbacks have already been sidelined by injury through the season’s first two weeks. With Daniels, Burrow, McCarthy, Fields, and Purdy all questionable or unavailable, Week 3 will showcase backups in critical matchups across the league. The rash of injuries underscores just how fragile success can be in a league defined by the quarterback position.
