Vick Leads Norfolk State to Dramatic Overtime Victory
Michael Vick notched his first win as a college head coach on Saturday, guiding Norfolk State to a 34-31 overtime victory over Virginia State. The win marked a major rebound after the Spartans’ season-opening loss to Towson.
Trailing 23-7 at the start of the fourth quarter, Norfolk State mounted a furious comeback. Down 31-24 with just over two minutes remaining, the Spartans tied the game to force overtime. Virginia State had a chance to seal it in regulation, but a potential game-winning field goal bounced off the crossbar.
Norfolk State Levels Season Record at 1-1
In overtime, Norfolk State capitalized, completing the rally for Vick’s first win in his new role. The victory brings the Spartans to 1-1 on the season.
While the win was a milestone for Vick, it came against Virginia State, a Division II program. The celebration may be short-lived as Norfolk State heads into a much tougher matchup next weekend against Rutgers.

Vick’s Journey From NFL Star to College Coach
Vick’s 13-year NFL career was marked by both highlight-reel plays and controversy, including his imprisonment for dogfighting. In recent years, he worked as an analyst for Fox before being hired by Norfolk State in December. His first win on the sidelines signals the start of a new chapter for both him and the Spartans program.
