The identification, announced on Thursday, July 9, brought a name to the tragedy that left one person dead and five others injured following the July 4 shooting outside the East Meadows Apartments in the 1700 block of Lamar Street near Phillis Wheatley Park.
Deadly Fourth of July Shooting
The shooting occurred around 10:45 p.m. on July 4 as families and residents gathered for an Independence Day barbecue and celebration.
When San Antonio police officers arrived, they found multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds. Goode was pronounced dead at the scene, while five others—including two children—were transported to area hospitals for treatment.
Victim Identified
On July 9, the Bexar County Medical Examiner identified the victim as Cory Dajuan Dixon Goode, 18, ending several days during which authorities had not publicly released his name.
Family members previously told local media that Goode had been spending the holiday with relatives when gunfire broke out.
Police: Shooting Was Targeted
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus has said investigators believe the shooting was targeted, indicating that specific individuals—not the community gathering itself—were the intended targets.
